Find out about the local people who are standing to be Bandley Hill & Poplars' Conservative Councillors in May 2024:
David Denny-Stubbs
I am a Health & Safety practitioner and moved to Stevenage in 2020, I live locally in Bandley Hill & Poplars. When I moved to the town, I was struck by what Stevenage has to offer over London. We have it all in Stevenage and I want to keep what we have.
We have our green open spaces and countryside. I will be vehemently opposed to building on Green Belt land. I am opposed HMO's Houses of Multiply Occupancy and High-Rise Development. I believe in community and the spirit that comes with that.
And with that community spirit, I believe in supporting mothers and facilities that mothers need such as the Bandley Hill Play Centre, which Labour chose to close and privatise.
Not only am I for mothers and families l want to ensure our green policies are enhanced so future generations have the environment in which to live, meaning that young people don't just grow up in Stevenage, but thrive in Stevenage.
I want to tackle crime head-on. From antisocial behaviour, and vehicle crime to fly-tipping. I want to establish a proper recycling since Sainsbury has removed its recycling scheme.
Most of all I want to lift the lid on the Labour-dominated council which has controlled our town for over 50 years. It's time to hold them to account and lift the lid on their operations. See what has been going on with OUR money. Only by voting Conservative can you then have YOUR views listened to. Only by voting Conservative can we have a balanced Council within Stevenage which represents YOUR views and holds Labour to account.
Victoria Facey
I was born in Stevenage and have lived in the town my whole life. Currently, I live in Poplars with my husband (who is currently an elected Conservative councillor) and young daughter. Being a parent, I regularly find myself in the local play areas, many of which have been neglected by the local council and make for a disappointed playtime!
Throughout my life, I have experienced all the good things Stevenage has to offer but sadly I have also witnessed the slow decline in the town, particularly the town centre, due largely to the lack of care from the Labour- run council. I know firsthand the anxieties and stress caused by the lack of residential car parking and I want to do anything and everything in my power to improve this for others.
Stevenage has been run by Labour since the 1970s, and regardless of national politics, isn’t it time someone else had a chance? Please vote for me and my Conservative colleagues on 2 May. If you want to see change locally, maybe it’s time to change the way you vote locally!
Matthew Wyatt
I have lived in Stevenage all my adult life. I work as an accountant and was educated at the Thomas Alleyne school.
Walking around the area is it clear to me that car parking, especially in the Bandley Hill area is a major issue. Therefore, if elected, I will ensure that where the opportunity arises without harming the local environment, more spaces can be provided.
Stevenage Borough Council has been Labour-run for over 50 years. During that time Stevenage Labour Party have made sure that as many local appointments to community, resident and voluntary groups as possible are filled with their Party’s supporters. For too long they have tried to keep Stevenage as a one-party state, restricting diversity of thought which could enhance and benefit our town’s people.
For far too long the voters of Bandley Hill have been taken for granted. The Labour Councillor who was elected to represent you last May is already jumping ship to represent another part of Stevenage after less than 12 months in the role. Labour has used your votes to further their own careers. I have no interest in a higher political career, I just hope to represent local people in my hometown and improve our neighbourhoods.
However, on two occasions in the last 10 years you have voted in Conservative Councillors, with your support. We have proved to you that we get things done, so I would ask you, on May 2nd, to do so again.
David, Victoria and Matthew's 3 priorities for Bandley Hill & Poplars:
Invest in children's play areas & projects
We’ll work hard to rejuvenate our local children’s parks. Under Labour, many parks have fallen into disrepair, and Labour also closed the Bandley Hill Play Centre.
Tackle antisocial behaviour & fly-tipping
We will work with the police and residents to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour in our streets. We will also be proactive in reporting and clearing fly-tips/litter.
Create more residential car parking
We understand the lack of parking in some streets is a cause of frustration. We will do whatever we can to improve the amount of parking. We will also oppose Labour’s anti-car policies.
